Making A Difference To The Little Ones

Sad as it is, children in Singapore are not exposed to Mother Nature as much as they should be.
It's a fact that Singaporean parents would rather have their children read and learn from books and computers, than to take in and learn from what nature has provided us with.
As such, some children grow up not appreciating nature, which leads to them not understanding the need to protect the environment, and hence them harming the environment through their daily activities.

To reverse this and to slow down the damage we are doing to Mother Earth, education is crucial.

Making a difference is all about starting small, and letting that take you to BIGGER and better deeds.
Like what we always say, it takes only a little to make a HUGE difference =)

With that concept in mind, we decided to start small too...
by making a difference in the lives of young children, so that they grow up to be adults with the right values and knowledge.

Yesterday, a group of 120 PCF Bukit Panjang kindergarten students came to GardenAsia.
This is a field trip for them that takes them back to nature.

Look at them, sitting at BlueSky, patiently awaiting for further instructions =)

Children are always thirsty for knowledge, and when Uncle Kenny spoke, everyone paid attention and listened attentively to what he had to share.

Children are inquisitive and spontaneous too...
Something I've noticed?
They like agreeing with EVERYTHING you say =P
Do you have a coconut tree at home? *hands raised*
Do you have a banana tree at home? *hands raised*
Do you have a papaya tree at home? Once again... *hands raised*

Curious. Inquisitive. Spontaneous. Enthusiastic. Optimistic. Cheerful. Innocent.
It's all these characteristics of children that make them so fun and enjoyable to be with.
It's also because of who they are that makes it ideal for us to instill the right values and morals that will be with them as they grow.

Instead of telling them what nature is, how they can protect it and what they can do to make a difference...
WHY NOT SHOW THEM?!

Let's go kids... Uncle Kenny is going to take you for a tour =D

Let's meet one of Morchoo and Titoy's friend...
Say 'Hello' to Mr. Froggo!

Most of these children have probably NEVER seen a live frog before (... unless it's in a fish tank in a restaurant)
But we should never underestimate the courage little kids have...
Most of them were excited about petting Mr. Froggo =D

Kids... what sound does a frog make?
*muuuaackz*

Next, let's make our way to the indoor plant nursery...

When we come in contact with plants, we often use only our sense of sight...
However, we should also use our sense of touch and smell =)

FEEL the texture of the leaves of the mosquito plant...

Now, SMELL the scent it gives off that repels mosquitoes.

What other interesting plants do we have here?

Once taught to feel the plants,
the children were zealously feeling every plant and flower that caught their attention =)

Did you know that dried leaves can be compacted and made into a ball and be used as ornaments and decorations in homes?

Nooo... this is NOT a coconut, it's a ball of dried leaves =)

Over in Morchoo and Titoy's Magical Garden...

... the children put their sense of touch and smell to use once again.
Now they are touching every plant they can get their hands on ^_^

Oooo... what's up there? (Ans: Coconuts)

Let's cross Morchoo and Titoy's bridge now.
Be careful, everybody walk in a single file line...

OK... we've come to the end of the tour...
NOW, IT'S TIME FOR SOME GAMES!!!

Game #1: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The evil monster has invaded Morchoo and Titoy's favourite golf course...
and she left behind SOOO much trash! What a mess!!
Kids, can you help to clean up this mess by putting the trash into the correct bins?

Plastic... Fabric... Metal... Paper... Which is which??

This game is an interesting and fun way to educate children on the importance of recycling,
as well as teach them how to sort out their trash for recycling.
This is also an effective way to communicate the information as children remember better when it is taught through a hands-on game =)

Game #2: Tree Bark Shading

Let Uncle Kenny show you how it's done...
First, you lay a piece of plain paper flat onto the surface of the tree bark.
Then, you hold your pencil at an angle, and shade with the side of the lead.

Simple! Can you see the difference textures between the bark of 2 different trees?

Now, it's YOUR turn!

Erm... Need a hand over there?

This activity encourages children to be more observant of the little details around them.
It also tells them that even a simple tree bark can have various textures and colours,
and that's the beauty of Mother Nature... all that happens naturally =)

That's all the games for today!

Now, before all of you go...
Let's meet Morchoo and Titoy's other friend, Mr. Wormpy!

Children In Action! Fearless!! =P

PATH Market @ VivoCity

LET'S PUT OUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR MORCHOO AND TITOY
AS THEY MAKE THEIR
DEBUT APPEARANCE @
VIVOCITY!!

Despite having to work this weekend, it was one that's filled with fun and laughter =)

The PATH Market is an arts and crafts fair held at VivoCity during the first weekend and last weekend of every month. This fair serves as a platform for social entrepreneurs to introduce their products into the market.

This weekend, GardenAsia and the students of Riverside Secondary School are proud to be a part of this event.

Let's have a look at our PATH Market booth...

So, what do we have for sale at our booth?

We have our Flower of Hope =)
This handmade flower is a product of GAKids' social enterprise efforts.
Going at only $1, these flowers have a deeper meaning hidden far beyond its simple outlook.
These flowers were handmade by people in the cottage industry.
By engaging the local cottage industry, we are able to provide employment opportunities for ex-mental patients at the Simei Care Centre and contribute to the Pupil Needy Fund of Riverside Secondary School

Let's see... what else do we have for sale?

Our very first "Magic Pot"!!
For all aspiring gardeners, if you have no idea where to start, start here! Everything you need to get started can be found in this pot of ours.

Our Magic Pot includes:

Besides our Flower of Hope and Magic Pot, we also sold handmade Christmas mistletoes at the PATH Market. These were also made by the people at the Simei Care Centre.

Enough about our products... let's have a look at how our weekend went =)

Look at all the people Morchoo + Titoy made smile =D

Not only do kids love them... teenagers do too ^_^

Simei Care Centre

Today, everyone made their way down to the Simei Care Centre to get first hand experience of what the cottage industry is about, and to better understand the way the home is run.

When they first arrived, everyone gathered in a room and sat on couches in a circle.
Geoffrey (the guy in blue below) will be taking them on a tour of the Simei Care Centre.
However, before any tour was conducted,
Geoffrey started off by announcing that the students had to take a survey...

(... everyone filling out their forms with their most truthful answers)

Once everyone completed their forms,
Geoffrey went on to explain the purpose of the forms.

Do you wanna know what it was for?

On each form, a different scenario was written.
Hence, each student received a unique scenario.
By answering questions relating to the scenario, they would be able to determine the level of stigma they have towards mental patients.

After that, Geoffrey went on to asking them what they knew about mental illness?
What do they think patients with mental illness are like?
Many a times, thanks to Hollywood movies, we often perceive patients with mental illness to be serial killers and violent attackers and fighters.
Contrary to this, Geoffrey told us that this is the almost total opposite of what things are really like in real life. Mental illness patients behave just like normal human beings do, and they only turn aggressive and violent when they are provoked or when they feel threatened and vulnerable.

After a short explanation of what mental illness is,
the teenagers now know the types of mental illness, the cause, as well as ways it can be cured. Geoffrey made it a point to stress that early detection of mental illness is important as the chances of recovery are higher.

After learning more about them, the teenagers are now ready to meet the residents of the Simei Care Centre at their workshop =)
Everyone was busy at work, some were making mistletoe, some making Christmas cards, some cross-stitching Christmas designs, and others making flowers out of recycled materials.

Handmade Christmas Cards...

Handmade Mistletoe...

Handmade Recycled Material Flowers...

Cross-Stitched Designs...

Spending time with the residents of the Simei Care Centre was GREAT fun!!
They are extremely friendly and warm people, and they love having visitors join them =)

After spending about 30min at the workshop, it was time for us to take our leave.
Geoffrey took us upstairs to have a look at the bedrooms that were available at the Simei Care Centre.

There, everyone was impressed by the recreational facilities provided for the residents.
Some of them even started playing and having their own game =P

For the last stop of our tour, everyone gathered in the Homespun office.
With the help of Homespun, a company that reaches out to the cottage industries and bind them with local talents to create inspiring everyday objects, the people in the cottage industry are thriving. Basically, Homespun injects designs and ideas for products into the cottage industry, and the craftsmen in the industry (… who are underprivileged and/or handicapped) produce these products. Homespun also helps to create awareness, promote and sell the products. Ultimately, Homespun aims to be the platform for Asian designers to showcase their works of creations.

This is Catherine, owner of Homespun...

After everyone was done looking around and exploring all the interesting creations in the room,
it was time to get down to business and to discuss what needed to be done for the
PATH Market @ Vivocity event.

After giving the youths a brief...
Kenny told them to think about it on their way home, and to generate ideas for the PATH Market.
Should they come out with anything, they can post it on the tagboard on this blog =)

Unfortunately, no one has suggested anything yet =(
Come on guys... we need your input!!
If you think of anything, don't be afraid to share it =D
Don't be shy about it... the PATH Market is a team effort!
